Crohn’s disease, also known as ileitis or enteritis, is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which affects predominantly the small and large intestine. Crohn's is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 30 but can occur at any age. Men and women have an equal chance of being affected by Crohn’s disease and genetic factors may contribute to the cause. Crohn's disease may be chronic and recurrent. It causes inflammation in the digestive tract that may cause pain and diarrhea as a result from the intestines emptying frequently.
Crohn’s disease can be difficult to diagnose because it has similar symptoms of other IBD conditions such as Ulcerative Colitis. Ulcerative colitis inflames and causes ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine; with Crohn’s disease, all layers of the digestive tract may be affected. Some symptoms may include abdominal pain in the lower right area, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Fever, weight loss, rectal bleeding, arthritis, skin problems, poor appetite (which can cause malnutrition), and night sweats, depending on the location and severity of the Crohn’s disease.

There are several different kinds of Crohn’s Disease such as Crohn's colitis, Crohn's enteritis, Crohn's terminal ileitis, and Crohn's enterocolitis and ileocolitis. Your physician may perform an x-ray, Blood tests, or colonoscopy to diagnose your condition. The actual cause is not known; however there is a theory that Crohn’s Disease is an auto immune disorder.
An autoimmune disorder is a disease that occurs when the immune system creates auto antibodies that attack and destroy the healthy body tissue instead of the bacteria, foods, and other harmful substances which causes inflammation and damage and can lead to ulceration and bowel injury. However, researchers do not know if the abnormality in the functioning of the immune system is a cause or a result of Crohn’s Disease.
